Manufacturing is the production of merchandise using manpower and machines, tools, chemical and biological processing, or formulation. In simple terms, manufacturing can be defined as transformation of raw material into finished goods. These finished goods can either be used by manufacturing units to produce more complex goods/products, like household appliances, automobiles, etc, or can be directly pushed into the market for selling them to the consumers.
In India, manufacturing industry has gone through many development phases over the period of time. Manufacturing sector contributes about 16% of the country's GDP and about 50% to the country's exports. Manufacturing industry provides employment to more than 60 million people in India. Deloitte' global index 2013 has ranked India the fourth most competitive manufacturing nation, behind, China, USA and Germany.

The manufacturing industry in India has steadily grown and consistently created jobs over the period of time. India is looking to create as many as 100 million skilled jobs in the manufacturing sector by raising its share of GDP to 25 per cent from 16 per cent.
With more and more global players entering the Indian market, the demand of engineers is increasing tremendously. Demand in the manufacturing sector is for engineers in all disciplines. Apart from technical competencies, employers also look for skills like leadership, communication, problem-solving, analytical ability, IT savvy, man-management skills and a team player.
