About the Module

Production engineering module requires a candidate to have a thorough understanding of manufacturing processes such as casting & joining, metal cutting & tool design, machine tools, Computer Integrated Manufacturing etc. to follow the engineering processes.

A relatively new engineering discipline, production engineering is an answer to the ever increasing needs of industrial and manufacturing sector.

With the main objective of integrating manufacturing technology with management, production engineering typically encompasses wide knowledge of engineering practices and is aware of the management challenges that are often related to production and ensures a smooth and economic production process. Once the blueprint of the engineering design is finalized, the production engineers work on concepts regarding work-study, ergonomics, operation research, manufacturing management, materials management, production planning, etc. thus enabling efficient production processes within the company.

Primarily including design and control, the four year course in production engineering involves a continuous improvement of integrated systems providing customers with high quality services in a well-timed and cost effective manner. Students are expected to possess an expertise in design, development and implementation of new production processes, information and control systems and computer controlled inspection, assembly and handling.

I am a production engineer. What am I supposed to do in the industry?

A production engineer is responsible for supervising the day-to-day production issues. Planning and scheduling production, buying raw materials from suppliers, production engineers for responsible for maintaining the overall product quality.

Industry scope:

Production engineers can work in both public and private sector. From automobile, electronics, steel plants, refineries, technical wings for armed forces to public sector industries, production engineers are often recruited as junior engineers and get promoted to the ranks of Assistant Engineer, Assistant Executive Engineer, and Executive Engineer as they get promoted to the higher ranks. Students with a post graduate degree like management can find work in administrative and managerial positions in government departments.
